Chapter 1. The Canadian Maintenance Workers
This is possibly a 1true story. It 2took place in 3Canada and was once 4reported in a 5famous newspaper about thirty years ago. Two 6appointed 7maintenance workers, Jack and Luke, got a 8mission and were 9sent by the Canadian 10government to the far away 11northern 12territory. It was also a place near the 13polar 14frontier of the 15Arctic Ocean. The two men had to 16fix a 17serious 18blackout 19problem there. The weather was very 20changeable there. The 21snow was falling 22heavily, so in the 23process of their 24electrical
maintenance work, the two maintenance workers were 25forced to find and 26hide in a 27neighboring small 28log
cabin. The small log cabin had been 29abandoned by 30unknown 31inhabitants 32in the past long ago. They hoped they could 33escape from the 34terrible 35snowstorm in the 36severe winter.
37Unfortunately, one of the two maintenance workers, Luke, 38died not very long 39afterwards, 40due to 41pneumonia which had 42set in from 43a bad cold. Sadly, 44poor Jack was 45left behind to 46stay 47alone at the log cabin. He 48looked forward to the great 49blizzard possibly 50stopping soon. Jack really missed his family 51badly. He tried 52hard to 53count the days 54so that he could 55get a clear picture of how long it had been since he left his home in 56Vancouver. He 57guessed that
58probably up until then, he had been there for 59a couple of weeks. But after counting more 60closely, he started to 61complain. 62Actually, it had been almost one month's time since he left his 63hometown Vancouver to 64come
to this 65barren, 66distant, and 67deserted place. It 68felt
